Musical direction and arrangements by Keith Ingham, with Ingham on piano, and featuring Glenn Zottola, trumpet and flugelhorn; Ken Peplowski, tenor saxophone; Phil Bodner, alto saxophone and bass flute; George Masso, trombone; John Chiodini, guitar; Jay Leonhart, bass; Grady Tate, drums; Mark Sherman, vibes and percussion

Harbinger co-founders Ken Bloom and Bill Rudman produced this album, originally released on Angel Records in 1993 and hailed by critic Will Friedwald as “the most sensational Peggy Lee set since her Capitol LP era.”

A Harold Arlen songbook like no other, the CD includes eight songs by the composer that had never been recorded before, all of them originally written by Arlen for stage, screen or television with such master lyricists as Johnny Mercer, Yip Harburg and Dorothy Fields. And just as important, the collection captures Lee’s artistry near the end of her life – a time when failing health only deepened her commitment to reveal layers of meaning and emotion in the songs she chose to interpret.

Writing in the Chicago Tribune, Howard Reich called LOVE HELD LIGHTLY “one of the most notable works in her long career.” And Chris Cuffaro, in LA Weekly, noted: “This was one of those perfect ideas….And even rarer than a perfect idea is its combination with perfect execution, which is what we have here.”
